I am just curious as to why the North American market is shifting in the direction of short series and series with only a few volumes which have been compiled. I intend to project no animosity towards the idea, I am just curious.

A rousing cheer from the audience also went up for the announcement of a graphic novel adaptation of literary parody Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (due out in March 2010).

orz

Why does such hackneyed idea get a rousing cheer?

Also, a bunch of stuff I'm not interested in. Del Rey hasn't had a winner with me since School Rumble and Genshiken.

The issue was slightly touched upon by Del Rey in this panel & by Tokyo Pop in one of the panels they last hels a couple years ago,
Dallas Middaugh commented on Kitchen Princess or whatever it is that usually Volume 1 sells XXXX, Volume 2 sells XXX, Volume 3 sells XX, etc until the title ends up on life support while this title actually increased in sales which resulted in the licensing of a new title by the artist.
In the TP panel back when they commented they planned on focusing on licensing titles of no more than 8 volumes because it was harder to keep the sales going on longer titles.

So basically for every score like Fruits Basket, they found themselves stuck with endlessly long titles American fans were dropping as they lost interest.

Also, that way there's less fear of series being dropped and never finished.

Boo, and here I was hoping Pride and Prejudice zombies would go to Marvel or something. It would have been awesome to get maybe a team such as the one that was behind Marvel Zombies.

I say this because I like my gore. Gore in black and white manga-style can only look so... gory unless in the hands of someone well experienced in the pallet. It's looking doubtful that they'll get such an artist, but then again anything will be better than the drawings the actual book had throughout it.

My husband will be pleased to hear about The Talisman. Is it going to be released similarly to how the Marvel adaptations of The Dark Tower and The Stand have been going?

On the issue of shorter series... I like them too, cheaper to buy the whole series - and easier to get my library to invest in the whole thing. As someone who likes to feel assured it ends well (and that I won't want to sell my whole collection by the end), short series are a real plus.

Not that a long-running one once in a while is bad; after all, I love 20th Century Boys. But that series is going to be a serious economic investment, just the way Monster was, and it's not something you can do all the time.

Well that explains the delay for CLAMP in America (and I'm starting to wonder if they are pushing back the TRC artbook as well, I haven't heard anything about it since the announcement) and I have a friend or two who will like the Penny Arcade book.
But why oh WHY are they making an adaptation of Avatar?!? There are already ZILLIONS of great avatar comics from the Nicktoons magazine (plus some that never made it in), wouldn't it be smarter to compile all of those into one book since there is already a demand for it?!?
