Voice Actors Kenjiro Tsuda, Ryoko Shiraishi Comment on Dubbing Fifty Shades of Grey

posted on by Eric Stimson

Fifty Shades of Grey will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in Japan on July 2. The disc will include new footage and a Japanese dub that had been unavailable for the movie's theatrical premiere. Christian Grey will be played by Kenjiro Tsuda (Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh!, Lambo in Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Sadaharu in The Prince of Tennis), while Ana Steele will be played by Ryoko Shiraishi (Himeko in Sket Dance, Arashi in Natsu no Arashi!, Hayate in Hayate the Combat Butler).

"It's famous for being seen by many women, so... I was nervous but it was a lot of fun," Tsuda said. Shiraishi largely agreed: "While I was happy, I felt a lot of pressure too, like I had to make it great." Both actors found Fifty Shades of Grey to be different from what they were expecting. Tsuda thought it would be a "dry story, but actually my impression that it was a pure love story between a man and a woman changed." "I had the impression that it was about a young woman tricked by a bad man, but in reality, even if it was provocative, it was depicted very nicely and beautifully, so I was able to watch it with my heart beating faster," Shiraishi said.

As for the film's infamous sex scenes, Shiraishi had trouble with the scene "where [Ana] is touched for the first time... I voiced it while imagining what that would mean. [laughs] Watching the scenes where she puts up with pain was hard." Tsuda thought that he had "done it smoother than I had thought." Both actors haven't played roles with this much sex before.

Tsuda considered his character "sad" because he's "suffering from strain." He hoped the audience would "be happy if you enjoyed it not once, but every time you saw it." "Pure Ana is thoroughly influenced [literally "dyed by"] by her first love, Grey, but in my opinion, she's a strong woman," offered Shiraishi. She told the audience, "The movie is pretty, so you can't easily look away. I want you to enjoy the intense yet beautiful, heart-pounding story."
