Japanese Anime Fans Pick Which Characters They Want to Get Valentines From
posted on by Eric Stimson
Valentine's Day is approaching, and in Japan that means women must give chocolates to their male coworkers, colleagues, classmates or friends. But of course there's a romantic element to it still, and men daydream about getting fine chocolate from their secret crushes. The college student-oriented website My Navi Gakusei no Madoguchi polled 205 male college students between January 12 and 19 on which anime and manga characters they'd most like to receive Valentine's chocolates from and recently posted the results.
The findings were not presented with data, perhaps suggesting a wide variety of answers. The site did note that K-ON! received a number of votes, partially because Tsumugi likes sweet things and would probably give high-quality chocolate, and partially because receiving chocolate from the "gentle" girls of the Light Music Club would have "a healing effect." Otherwise, My Navi noted a tendency toward popular and long-running works, favorite characters, and girls known to be good at cooking like Sword Art Online's Asuna.
Sample answers included:
- Tsumugi (K-ON!)
- Mio (K-ON!)
- Azusa (K-ON!)
- Illyasviel (Fate series)
- Umi (Love Live! School idol project)
- Asuna (Sword Art Online)
- Leia Rolando (Tales of Xillia)
- Fujiko (Lupin III)
- Dorami (Doraemon)
- Minami (Touch)
- Ai (Case Closed)
- Sawako (Kimi ni Todoke - From Me to You)
- Yūsuke (Yowamushi Pedal, "as a friend")
- Sakaki (Azumanga Daioh)
- Aki (Silver Spoon)
Japanese fans also chose which characters they'd like to get chocolates from in 2015 and 2014, with completely different responses.
