Comiket is premiere event for dōjin, anime booths, and exclusive merchandise. The latter is usually posters, shirts, wall scrolls, or hug pillow covers. Akagi isn't about that. Akagi is about tricking your fellow Comiket visitors into thinking you're drinking blood.
The Takeshobo booth at Comiket 92 will sell five limited edition Akagi items, one of which is drink container that is made to look like a blood collection tube. The morbid item is a reference to the gambler's face off against Washizu that revolved around betting his own life blood at a rapid rate. The bottle will be sold at the event on August 11-13 for 2,000 yen.
The booth will also sell socks with the phrase "Zawa...", a t-shirt, branded nutritional drinks, stickers, and miniature towels.
The Akagi manga series begins on one stormy night, when Nangō is playing a game of Mahjong with the local yakuza. Soon, he finds himself on a losing streak. If Nangō loses, he will have to pay with his life. Suddenly, a young teenaged boy, Shigeru Akagi, barges in, drenched from the rain. After watching a couple of games, he offers to replace the struggling Nangō. At that moment, a new legend is born.
Fukumoto launched the ongoing manga series in Takeshobo's Kindai Mahjong magazine in 1992 and it will end in February 2018. The manga inspired a 2005 television adaptation by anime Studio Madhouse, and Crunchyroll streamed the anime starting in 2013. A second live-action drama series based on the Akagi -Yami ni Oritatta Tensai- manga will premiere this October on the BS Sukapaa! station.
