Tokyo Manga Bookstore Comic Takaoka to Close After a Century of Service

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Although it didn't start out as a manga specialty store, Comic Takaoka became one of the most iconic manga stores in Tokyo in the 1970s. But now, after a long and storied history serving manga fans of all stripes, Comic Takaoka is set to close at the end of March this year.

Comic Takaoka originally opened in the late 1800s under the name "Takaoka Shoten" (Takaoka Bookstore). It is located in Jimbocho, the famous bookseller district in Tokyo.

The bookstore explained that it was closing due to "a recession in publishing, influenced by the permeation of e-books." Business had not been doing well for the past five years. A notice at the front of the book store informs customers of the store's imminent closure and thanks them for their support over the past century of business.
